The Friends We Keep

If you’ve ever watched someone sharpen the blade of a knife, they rub that blade of iron against another piece of iron. And, in doing so, the blade is shaped and sharpened. In the same manner, when people of good moral character come together they can have a profoundly positive effect on one another’s life.

Years ago a motivational speaker famously said, “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” While I’m not familiar with the studies behind that statement, I do know that the Bible clearly tells us the people we associate with will definitely influence us…negatively or positively.

Hanging out with people that exhibit bad behavior will eventually rub off on us. “Don’t befriend angry people or associate with hot-tempered people, or you will learn to be like them and endanger your soul.” - Proverbs 22:24

But, on the flip side, surrounding ourselves with people of good character and high integrity will help build those same qualities in us. “Walk with the wise and become wise…” - Proverbs 13:20

We have the ability to choose our inner circle of friends carefully, asking ourselves if they will help us reflect more of Jesus and making sure we can offer them the same.

A CLOSING PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you for the people in my life that champion and encourage my best characteristics. Open my eyes to any undesirable behaviors I have and surround me with people who will help bring about positive change.
