An Unexpected Answer

Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. - Jeremiah 29:12

Having had a bad day, I lay in bed that night, wrestling with my thoughts and emotions while my husband slept soundly beside me. I poured out my heart silently to God, asking for His comfort. Just then my husband put His arm around me, drawing me close, then drifted back to sleep. I quietly resumed my prayer, repeating my plea for comfort.

That’s when I felt God speak to me—not audibly with my ears to hear, but clearly for my heart to understand.“I just did,” He gently responded, and I immediately knew that my husband’s warm embrace had been God’s tangible way of surrounding me with His love.

God’s answer to prayer had not come in a wave of peace or a familiar scripture verse brought to mind. Instead, that night, He used another human being to demonstrate in a physical way what words sometimes cannot. It was an act of compassion from God and something I almost missed entirely.

God listens to and answers our every prayer. He is not bound by our timetables nor our expectations. And if we are too distracted by our own situations, we’re apt to overlook the obvious. I was blessed that night to receive God’s response and fell fast asleep in the comfort of His loving arms.

A CLOSING PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you for your attentiveness to the words we speak. Thank you that you answer our prayers in ways that are not only good but ultimately best for us. Help us to be attentive in return and watchful for your responses. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
